About the event
This workshop takes its inspiration from Matisse's painting titled 'Sorrow of the King' which refers to Rembrandt’s 'David Playing the Harp Before Saul', painted 300 years earlier. Using simple shapes and bright colours, Matisse created a modern image that deals with similar themes to that of the Dutch master.
In the workshop, you will “time travel” through art by using an image by one of the old Masters and transform it into a contemporary painting. We will ask questions such as:
What colours would Vermeer have used had he been born 300 years later?
How would Manet have painted people if he had been a modernist?
You will be guided through a series of steps to simplify the image and transform it in a way that is unique to you.
